Things to see and do

San Bruno Mountain

This exploration of San Bruno Mountain State and County Park via the Summit Loop Trail takes you to an island of open space surrounded by a sea of residential and industrial development. Despite this urban setting, the mountain’s rugged canyons and ridges host a remarkable array of rare and/or endangered species. Among these are several species of butterflies and more than a dozen plants, including three manzanitas. When not fogbound, the trails here afford views of San Francisco and beyond, and the spring wildflower displays are sensational (most of the year, something is in bloom). Start at the parking area past the entrance kiosk off Guadalupe Canyon Parkway, and stay on the Summit Loop Trail throughout. read more about San Bruno Mountain

San Bruno Mountain State Park

San Bruno Mountain Park is located in the town of Brisbane, California, south of San Francisco, between U.S. Highway 101 and Interstate 280. This State Park encompasses 2,266 acres and provides a mountain setting within a metropolitan area. read more about San Bruno Mountain State Park

Bernal Heights Park

This hilltop park provides fantastic views of San Francisco Bay, downtown San Francisco, and the Mission District in the foreground. At the top of the friendly residential neighborhood of Bernal Heights you'll find locals and their dogs (many, many dogs) roaming around its paths and grassy slopes, chatting over lattes from nearby cafes on Cortland St. A few years ago there was a minor sensation when neighbors walking their dogs in the evening began reporting coyote sightings at this urban oasis; research and a well-made documentary called San Francisco: Still Wild at Heart proved that this park is wilder than many neighbors thought (or are comfortable with). read more about Bernal Heights Park

Twin Peaks

These two mountains located in San Francisco's geographic heart offer stunning panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and verdant Marin County to the north, the Bay Bridge winding toward the hills in the east, Silicon Valley sprawl to the south, the sparkling sea to the west, and the undulating cityscape below. The best time to go is dusk, when sunset casts a mauve glow in the sky and the city lights start to twinkle. Visiting Twin Peaks is a romantic must as well as a photographer's dream. read more about Twin Peaks

Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove

When city father Sigmund Stern passed away in 1931, his wife Rosalie purchased a swath of land, some 160 acres, in the midst of the rapidly developing Sunset District, as a permanent memorial to him, and deeded the land to The City to be used in perpetuity as a recreation ground. Before becoming a public park this plot of land, a green oasis amidst sandy dunes, had a rough and tumble history. At one point it was successfully defended during a siege by a gang of henchmen from San Mateo who were trying to "move" their holdings northward towards San Francisco. After title disputes were settled, and the blood had dried, the place was transformed into a resort ground of the finest order, with the still standing Trocadero hotel building at the center. Upon its sale to Rosalie Stern, the hotel was shuttered and repurposed, and the natural acoustics of the narrow valley edged by redwoods and eucalypts led to the construction of a concert pavilion and the founding of the Stern Grove Music Festival. This summer Sunday concert series still charms locals and visitors alike with free shows by some of music's finest performers as well as annual appearances by the San Francisco Opera, Symphony and Ballet. read more about Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove

Stern Grove Festival

San Francisco's longest running music festival is also its longest running free festival, which only partly explains its popularity. Set in the beautifully renovated Stern Grove festival pavilion next to the historic Trocadero, the summer long festival features world music greats, American masters, big name bands, and annual performances by the San Francisco Symphony, Ballet and Opera. Locals know to get there at least 3 hours before the 2 pm start time to nab a nice flat picnic spot that's not behind an enormous eucalyptus tree. They bring a picnic lunch, sweaters for the inevitable fog, and copious amounts of wine or beer. And then they stand and dance. Join them! read more about Stern Grove Festival

Precita Eyes Muralists

San Francisco's Mission District is known for more than just great Mexican food and offbeat dive bars. It is also home to one of the most impressive collections of public murals anywhere. While many are decades old, new murals are constantly being added to the scene by a flourishing group of professional muralists working out of the Precita Eyes muralist collective. This great resource also helps art lovers by preserving and interpreting these fantastic works of public art. Tours given by muralist members of the collective present 75 murals in just 6 blocks. It's a great way to get to know one of San Francisco's richest neighborhoods. read more about Precita Eyes Muralists

Monster Park

This is the football stadium that will never die. Although it is currently named Monster Park, this field has a long tradition in the Bay Area. It was originally known as Candlestick Park, owing to its location on Candlestick Point. With the rise of corporate sports sponsorships, the "Stick" was known as 3Com Park, for the telecom giant. This naming gave way to the current moniker, Monster Park, after the industrial cable manufacturer. read more about Monster Park

Encantada Gallery of Fine Art

Trips to take

Best of San Francisco Outdoors

San Francisco is the perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Not only does the city boast a treasure trove of green spaces, beaches, and outdoor activities, but it also serves as a launching point for amazing nature attractions in its environs, many of which are under an hour away by car. In the city, explore the wonders of Golden Gate Park, take in unparalleled views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin from Baker Beach, or surf killer waves at Ocean Beach. Links lovers can enjoy the adjacent Harding and Fleming golf courses. Head north of the city to Marin for hiking trails galore at Mt. Tamalpais State Park; the Dipsea Trail is a challenging yet popular route, extending from Muir Woods National Monument to Stinson Beach. Further north, Pt. Reyes State Park offers seaside hikes, an abundance of wildlife, and serene camping spots. read more about Best of San Francisco Outdoors

San Francisco: Best Food

Gourmands have always lauded San Francisco as a food paradise. However, San Fran’s foodie frontiers extend beyond its many award-winning restaurants, such as Gary Danko, and the trailblazing California cuisine served up at Chez Panisse. Seafood lovers can enjoy the fresh daily catch at Scoma’s’ and other Fisherman’s Wharf’s eateries. Ethnic fare fans can feast on top-notch Latin American, Asian, and more world cuisines. We’re partial to burritos at Pancho Villa, dim sum at Yank Sing, Vietnamese California-style at Slanted Door, and sushi at Ozumo. Health-conscious epicures can savor gorgeous produce and more culinary treats at the San Francisco Ferry Building Marketplace & Farmer’s Market. And we haven’t even gotten to dessert yet…head to Citizen Cake for a daily dose of sweetness. read more about San Francisco: Best Food

Top San Francisco Free Attractions

There are plenty of free things to see and do in San Francisco. There are tons of neighborhoods to explore, from the country’s biggest Chinatown to the mural-lined alleys of the Latin-flavored Mission District (Balmy Alley, Precita Eyes, and Women’s Building are the best) to the former hippie enclave of Haight-Ashbury, which happens to be perched on the edge of the natural wonderland of Golden Gate Park. You can also take a leisurely stroll down Lombard Street, of the city’s most famous sights, or challenge yourself by walking up Telegraph Hill’s shady streets to Coit Tower, which affords unparalleled views of the city and bay. In summer months, the Stern Grove Music Festival features free outdoor world music performances every Sunday; we recommend getting there early to stake a prime spot and enjoy a picnic. read more about Top San Francisco Free Attractions
